SEO Blunders to Avoid When Building Traffic
This time around I'm going to cover some of the issues you'll want to avoid in the process of gaining more targeted eyeballs to your website.
Impatient SEO strategies and inconsistent application.
Many business owners jump into the process of SEO with the idea that they'll hit number one with a bullet. They fail to grasp the full implication of their position in the Information Super Highway. If you have a popular product or service, there are going to be a lot of competitors looking to get ahead of you. If you are just getting in on the SEO game and there are 25 pages of competitors ahead of you when you start out in the search engine placement race, it's going to take some time and effort to get past everyone on the list to get to the first page in your profitable keywords. That means you need to stay consistent in posting your site, updating your content and building back links.
Sticking to one tool for your SEO campaign is suicide.
The idea of using just one form of search engine tactics is something that many new marketers do initially. It is important for you to use at least five different tools for optimizing your website and building traffic. Choose four top search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, Alta Vista, for example.) and aim to rank high on them in specific keywords that many people would be interested in. Start with the least popular keywords and graduate to more popular keywords as you develop more link popularity.
Ignoring article marketing and promotions.
The average Internet marketer puts up a website and hopes for the best. Many people who begin to write articles never get past the first 10 efforts. Write articles; lots of them. You must participate in forums, submit your website to many directories and search engines and exchange links with related websites that have high popularity rank. Create a plan of action and follow it. List the strategies that you intend to follow in optimizing your website for search engines, and make sure that you carry them out on a regular basis.
Lack of appropriate keywords for your niche.
This may come as a shock to you but if you don't have 100 or more keywords for your niche, you may not be exploring your SEO potential. If you want to successfully optimize your website, you need to know all your keywords and it is also important that you use these keywords on your website content, in your articles, and in any other content that you use to promote your website. There are several programs that will allow you to explore all the subtle versions and permutations of keywords. This will allow you to dominate a few of the little used but popular search terms.
Keyword spamming in hopes of gaining traffic.
This technique is used to grab as many eyeballs as possible without benefit of discretion. Many people make the mistake of using un-targeted or misleading keywords and phrases on their websites and web copy in hopes of driving more traffic to their website. They even throw "invisible" keywords into their web pages or over populate their code in hopes of gaining an advantage with the search engine spiders. They end up being black listed instead.
My advice to you is to be patient, be consistent and create your search engine credibility the old fashioned way; earn it. Many web masters get impatient and they want to see their website on the first page immediately. They fail to apply constant effort in implementing their SEO strategies. As my grandfather used to say, "Shortcuts usually draws blood." Don't get caught in the trap of taking the easy way out for the quick fix. You'll be rewarded for you efforts if you do the work.
